PORT OF QUÉBEC EARNS HIGHEST LEVELS OF GREEN MARINE CERTIFICATION FOR EIGHTH YEAR IN A ROW

default

Québec City, June 10, 2026 — For the eighth year in a row, the Port of Québec has achieved the highest environmental certification levels for Green Marine, a program that assesses the social and environmental performance of the maritime industry.

The certification involves a thorough assessment of numerous indicators in areas like air emissions management, biodiversity protection, waste management, and community relations. The Green Marine program encourages members to continually improve their practices while going above and beyond regulatory requirements.

The fact that we have maintained the highest levels of certification year after year is a testament to our teams’ tireless work. It reflects a profound and lasting resolve, driven by a constant desire to do better and position ourselves as a sustainable development leader. This is a far-reaching, long-term project.

Concrete efforts in sustainable development, the environment, and community relations

The Port of Québec was able to maintain Level 5 Green Marine certification thanks to its many initiatives in areas like sustainable development, the environment, and community relations.

These include a port-wide inventory of greenhouse gas emissions; workshops to co-develop solutions for traffic, greening, and public spaces; and a number of environmental projects with local partners.

In particular, the Port is continuing to work with Université Laval to track aquatic invasive species, partner with The Blue Organization and others for shoreline clean-ups, recycle dredged sediments in greening structures, and implement a land use plan (LUP) that encourages protection and enhancement zones. Its desire to take action is also reflected in its development of biodiversity and greening plans and its collaboration on numerous start-ups’ projects through the Lighthouse, its innovation laboratory.

These initiatives fit within an innovative and proactive approach to changing environmental and social practices.

Achieving and maintaining the highest levels of the Green Marine program requires rigor and commitment at every level of the organization. The Port of Québec’s results, which rank among the highest of the fifty or so ports certified by Green Marine, demonstrate a firm and consistent commitment to sustainable development.

These initiatives fit within an innovative and proactive approach to changing environmental and social practices.

Continuity at the forefront

The Port of Québec is continuing to pursue its sustainable development commitments, notably through its 2024–2028 ESGSD plan, which serves as a framework for the Port’s actions and encourages steady progress in its environmental and social practices.

About the Port of Québec

The Port of Québec is strategically located 1100 km from the Atlantic Ocean, close to the Great Lakes market. It is the last deepwater port in the St. Lawrence corridor, with a depth of 15 metres. This unique position allows Canadian companies to achieve significant economies of scale in both import and export trade.

With links to more than 40 partner countries, the Port of Québec and its employees handle an average of over 26 million tonnes of goods every year, representing more than $15 billion in commercial value.

The Port is also recognized as the leading cruise port on the St. Lawrence; along with all our partners in Québec’s maritime industry, we contribute to $2 billion in economic spin-offs while supporting some 12,000 jobs nationwide.

The Québec Port Authority (QPA) is ranked 4th out of the 17 Canadian port authorities in terms of revenue. While it is economically powerful, it is also known for its contributions to the area’s urban and social fabric thanks to port spaces like the Agora, the Baie de Beauport, the Oasis, La Cale, the Discoglace, and the Village Nordik.
