RED DUST CLASS ACTION SUIT
Québec City, Tuesday, February 5, 2019 – The Québec Port Authority (QPA) welcomes the ruling on the red dust class action lawsuit. Today marks the affair’s conclusion to the benefit of all parties involved.
The Port Authority had recognized the regrettable October 26, 2012 red dust incident from the start and sought, with the trial, to clearly establish the area affected, the number of claimants, and the compensation amount so that those affected could be compensated. From that standpoint, the QPA is satisfied with the ruling.
The Port and its users have implemented a whole host of measures—including real time monitoring, water cannons, and dust sensors—to mitigate the impact of its operations on surrounding neighborhoods. One of the sensors is in Vieux Limoilou and the data is published in real time on the Port’s website for greater transparency. The measures are indicative of the Port of Québec’s commitment to enforcing the highest environmental standards in the Port zone.
As legal proceedings still underway, the QPA will not be issuing further comments at this time.
