THE PORT SALUTES THE OPENING OF THE BEAUPORT BAY BEACH FOR SWIMMING

05/30/2016

Québec, May 30, 2016 – Port of Québec President and CEO Mario Girard welcomed the opening of the Beauport Bay beach for swimming at the launch of its program for the 2016 season. The Québec Port Authority (QPA) took the opportunity to acknowledge the hard work put in by the involved partners to create a rich and diversified offering for citizens.

Opened in 2008, the Beauport Bay beach is one of the port’s recreational and tourist spaces that foster a better quality of life in the community. The QPA acknowledges the desire of the citizens of Québec to have greater access to the banks of the St. Lawrence River. The act of opening the Beauport Bay for swimming thus reflects a willingness to bring the citizens closer to their river.

A dynamic program

The Québec Port Authority highlighted the City of Québec’s contribution to the swimming project. "I salute the City of Québec’s involvement in the project to allow swimming starting this summer. I am convinced that this new activity will be a great success in the community and help people get more out of the beautiful space that is Beauport Bay", said Girard, President and CEO of the Québec Port Authority.

The Québec Port Authority also highlighted GESTEV’s efforts to listen to citizens’ needs, which was a key factor in making Beauport Bay a top attraction in Québec. "The 2016 program reflects the citizens’ wishes, and we are happy that this unique space in Québec is more open to the people", Girard continued.

A strong city-port relationship

Beauport Bay is a space that was opened during the construction of Beauport’s industrial district in the 1960s. The district was officially recognized as a recreational and tourist space as part of the 2008 federal legacy project in honour of Québec’s 400th anniversary. Since then, the Beauport sector has had a dual function as an industrial port area and a recreational and tourist site, symbolizing a strong coexistence between the port and the city. Management of the Beauport Bay site is shared by the city and the port in collaboration with the event management firm GESTEV.
